Pitch:
Eleven-year-old Anna loves stories. On the eve of the Ukrainian New Year, she asks her grandmother for the most important story of all: the truth about what really happened to her mother. But before her grandmother can tell it, the story gets stolen. To get it back, Anna and her twin brother must work their way through a plot hole into the world of stories, accompanied by none other than the legendary witch, Baba Yaga. If she can’t defeat the leader of a society that runs on the power of stolen tales, she risks losing her grandmother’s stories, the last connection to her mother, forever. THE GIRL WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND with a Ukrainian twist.
Excerpt:
The day her grandmother’s stories were stolen, the borscht boiled, the snow fell, and the ravens cawed outside Anna’s kitchen window.
It wasn’t just any other day in Alaska, but the Ukrainian feast of Malanka, which fell two days before Anna’s twelfth birthday. Her twin brother Roman would probably ask Grandma Zenovia for video games and something with lots of sugar. Anna only wanted one thing this year: the truth about why her mother had left.
Last night, Anna had peeled beets for Grandma’s borscht. In the splashes of their pink dye, she imagined animals, the way some people saw constellations in the stars. A tiny pink fox lurked on her pinky. A rose colored wolf roamed across her thumb. She wondered if her mother ever did the same thing, wherever she was. Maybe the pink fox on Anna’s pinky could cross paths with a magenta deer leaping across her mother’s palm. And just then they would meet again, if only in a story.

Dear Alexandra,
I’ve always found it hard to articulate what I would be looking for in middle grade, which is why I have never been open to it widely. It’s not lack of interest in the genre, it’s just finding the MG voice that resonates has been hard for me to explain. But this sample and pitch is exactly it! I’d love to see more, if you’re interested in submitting, please send the full manuscript here: QueryManager.com/evascalzo/PitchWars2020
Best wishes,

Hi Alexandra,
Congratulations on completing Pitch Wars! You must be thrilled!

Dear Alexandra,
This description of your work immediately had me hooked. I would love to read more!
Would you please send your full manuscript, a synopsis of the project, and a short bio about what you do and any of your previous publications to Haley@CMALit.com? Each should be a separate attachment in Microsoft Word or PDF format. To ensure your email doesn’t get lost in the shuffle, please include “Pitch Wars” in your subject line.
The two other agents at Creative Media Agency, Paige Wheeler and Shannon Snow, are participating in Pitch Wars with me. Should one of them also request your manuscript, we would appreciate it if you would choose the agent you’d most prefer to work with and only send them the requested materials. Should they pass on the project for any reason, and you find yourself still seeking an agent, then you are of course free to resubmit to another member of CMA.
Thank you for taking the time to send me more of what you’ve written!
Sincerely,
Haley Casey
