Pitch:

THE WITCHES X LAST-LAST DAY OF SUMMER: When a local girl goes missing, 10-year-old Binyameen takes the case. The trouble is, no one but her brother remembers her. As more children go missing, Binyameen realizes that he must find the children and defeat a witch before he and his friends disappear too.

Excerpt:

Binyameen didn’t notice the magic at first. As he sat on the side entrance steps of Chapman School he tried to keep himself from thinking too much, knowing that his thoughts would turn to his dad. Instead, he buried his nose in his Spider-Man comic and waited for his friend Sami to arrive.

“Did you find it?” A tiny boy with wheat-colored hair leaned over the pages until his nose was inches away from Binyameen’s head.

Binyameen closed the book, keeping his page with his thumb, and grinned up at the boy. “Of course I did, Liam.”

He set down his comic and reached into his backpack to pull out a teddy bear with matted fur, brown from dust. As Liam grabbed for the bear, Binyameen held out his hand for payment. Liam took a large bag of M&Ms from his pocket and dropped it into the open hand. Then he snatched the teddy bear and hugged it against his chest.

“Thank you so much!” he cried. “Where did you find him?”

“By the stairs, on the soccer field.”

“But I checked all over the stairs! He must have fallen behind something.”

It had. Binyameen had found the bear wedged so far under the bush he had to reach his arm up to his shoulder into the bush to get it.

But this part he couldn’t explain. The prickling feeling at the back of his skull.

He just knew it would be there.
