Excerpt:

Four weeks ago, Dr. Ortega had placed two different X-Rays against a light for Mom and me to look at. They were a little blurry, but clearly, they were my hand. I didn’t know what I was looking for, and even though Mom nodded, I knew she couldn’t tell either.

When I glanced up, I caught my reflection in the glass. My tangled light brown hair hung loosely from my once tight ponytail. My cheeks were pink and blotchy, my brown eyes still bright red from when I’d been crying. Because Mom and Coach Rueben rushed me here in the middle of the game, I still wore my muddy uniform, my sports bra digging into my side. It would’ve been nice if they could’ve at least let me get changed. It was bad enough being dragged off the field in front of all the boys like a broken doll.

“Alright, Riley, I’ve got some good news and some bad news.” Dr. Ortega picked up my chart and scanned it quickly before continuing, “Good news, your thumb isn’t broken.”

I let out the biggest breath. “Thank God,” I mumbled, rubbing my swollen thumb.

“Bad news,” she said frowning. “You do have a moderate ligament tear, it’s going to heal with proper care, but you won’t be able to play soccer.”
