PW2021 MG #12: THE LIBRARY OF MONSTERS (Portuguese Fantasy Heist)
Mentee:
Sarah J. Mendonca
Mentored by:
Tracy Badua
Book Title:
THE LIBRARY OF MONSTERS
Category:
Middle Grade
Genre:
Portuguese Fantasy Heist
Word Count:
62,000

Pitch:

When the powerful Biblioteca de Monstros threatens her family’s struggling charm shop, twelve-year-old Rosa’s only option is joining a thief crew as a magical safecracker to steal from the Biblioteca itself. One problem: she’s not who the crew thinks she is. Rosa must learn to trust her magical abilities and her crew or risk losing her home, her livelihood, and her grandmother if their epic heist fails.

MORRIGAN CROW x OCEAN’S 8

Excerpt:

There’s only one rule that a Vermelha must follow at all costs. Never go beastling trapping with a stuffy nose. – The Coelho Family Bestiary

Rosa waited at the edge of the alleyway to the Spicy Chicken. She kept an eye on the street for any onlookers, but they were all too busy heading home after a hot summer day to take any notice of her or her beastling trap. She slipped down the grimy passageway towards the hidden door and knocked once. The owner, Encantador Pereira, opened the door and frowned at the empty alley behind her.

“Did anyone see you?”

“I don’t think so,” said Rosa.

She followed him through the busy kitchen, scorching from all the heat charms blasting at once. The cooks ignored her. Perhaps, thought Rosa, they hoped by ignoring her they’d avoid whatever lurked downstairs. If only they knew all the beastlings she’d almost been eaten by just that week. Pereira stopped in front of a door. Rosa noted the magical symbol on the lock, strange on something as bland as a cellar door. He touched the lock and it popped open.

“No use staring. You could watch me open it a thousand times and never learn its secrets. I thought Encantadora Coelho was coming tonight.”

Rosa gripped the trap tighter. “She’s busy — nasty gloom rat infestation.”
