Karin Slaughter’s Pieces of Her meets the TV series Dirty John

“They’re after me.” That's the last thing Hailey’s mother says to her before she disappears. Hailey isn’t concerned though—her paranoid mom always does shit like this, and everything’s fine.

But when she finds a bloody mess in the basement two days later, she worries it’s more than just another “mom-cried-wolf” scenario. To find her mom, Hailey must unravel the truth—deciding who and what to believe—before they both end up imprisoned or dead.

Excerpt:

They say home is where the heart is, but that’s not specific enough. Home is where the heart is trapped. Or to be more precise, home is where the heart is broken, mended, broken again, half-fixed and then trapped. Forever. And no matter how hard you try to leave it behind, it pulls you back in. Like a magnet. Oh, thought you got away, did you? That’s cute (cue evil laughter).

So here I was, back in the town I promised myself I’d never come back to, doing the same old shit I did when I was younger to stop myself from going crazy. It didn’t work back then, but old habits die hard I guess…

Sweat pooled on my head as I steadied myself against the wall, using it as a guide to navigate through the darkness. If you had told sixteen-year-old me I’d be sneaking into the house at twenty-four, worried about waking my mom, I would have killed myself. Well, probably not, because I’m too chicken shit, but you catch my drift.

Just for the summer, I reminded myself for the tenth time this week. Only a couple months.
