PW2021 Adult #46: GO FOR THE BODY (Speculative science fiction)
Mentee:
Ren Weston
Mentored by:
Rob Hart
Book Title:
GO FOR THE BODY
Category:
Adult
Genre:
Speculative science fiction
Word Count:
81,000

Pitch:

The Ataraxia Corporation is renowned for its vision, philanthropy, and cutting-edge research. Lesser known activities include involuntary human experiments, like the one that accidentally gave Emery Harris superpowers. Emery’s unbreakable body may be corporate property, but she refuses to be buried alongside Ataraxia’s other secrets. Her best shot at freedom lies with a reclusive scientist, a devout hacker, and a disgraced journalist planning to expose the experiments—but the corporation will go to any lengths to keep the truth hidden. Emery’s always been a fighter, but it will take more than muscle to bring Ataraxia down.

Excerpt:

Emery couldn’t stop staring at the hole in her wall.

Over the past two weeks, she’d come to know this bedroom in excruciating detail. The watermark on the ceiling, the chipped paint where the bedframe scraped the wall, the door that never fully closed. The hole, though—that was new. It wasn’t there ten minutes ago, when the last round of spasms shook Emery’s body until she blacked out.

Slowly, she unclenched her hand and traced the spiderweb of cracks in the cement. A small stream of blood trickled from her dust-covered knuckles. Emery shook her head, squeezing her eyes shut. A deep ache radiated through her bones.

She slid across the double bed, where she’d slept alone since coming home from the hospital, and opened the drawer in her bedside table. She sifted through old receipts and loose change until she found her pill bottle.

Empty.

Emery opened her mouth to call for Tommy, only to snap it closed again. The doctor sent her home with months’ worth of painkillers; if he realized they were all gone, he would have questions. He would worry. He might even want to go back to the hospital, which Emery absolutely refused to do.
