Pitch:

CARAVAL x THE BELLES x BAKE OFF

Considering Elara’s truth-telling tarts and dream-inducing cakes make her the best baker in Anespérer, you’d think she’d have better taste in men. After her last relationship ruined her career, she eagerly accepts an offer from a mysterious—and handsome—patron to enter a competition to become the city’s new head chef. Winning should be a piece of cake. Until Elara learns the last winner—a girl from the slums like herself—was murdered. And she was also enticed by a mysterious—and handsome—patron.

Excerpt:

Elara’s career rested on a single pinch of spice.

At a thousand soms a pound, even a few missing granules would be noticed. The jar of blister bark warmed in her palm as she debated the risk. Mama’s recipe said it was crucial for the taste and fire-breathing magie. It wouldn’t be the same if she made alterations, and she needed Gaetan to like it.

One bite. That’s all it would take, and he’d see why he should let her make Mama’s recipes in his mediocre shop. Elara was tired of making the same basic, tasteless bread day in and day out, and people had to be tired of eating it. Elara could show them something more if she could just prove what she was really made of. Wouldn’t anyone love a bread bursting with flavor that melted their breath into dragon fire?

Gaetan would understand. He might even make her head baker.

Her life would finally be back on track.

“Ovens!” someone shouted from the kitchen beyond the cramped pantry. “Where are those baguettes?”

Elara turned the jar, watching the spice shift like burning sands, all ember. No ash.

Just a pinch. That’s all.

She hid the jar in her sleeve and rushed back to her station.
