Genre:
#OwnVoices Contemporary Fantasy
Word Count:
52,000

Pitch:

PERCY JACKSON X CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE

Vicky returns to her birth country Uganda, looking forward to eating matooke and spending time with family friends. Instead, she finds a haunted tree, bickering ancestors, and a vague prophecy that implies she and her cousins will confront the god of death. Now they must decipher the prophecy and discover powers they never dreamed they had--and fast. The future of the world depends on it.

Excerpt:

I’ve been in Uganda for fifty-five minutes and already a goat has tried to kill me. It’s my first trip back since I was a baby, and I’m so excited to see Uganda and my cousins again. Or at least, I was. After 24 hours traveling, all I want now is a nap. “It’s only 40 kilometers to the house,” my uncle tells us as he starts the car. I look at mom questioningly. “About 25 miles,” she whispers. Uganda was a British colony, so they’re all kilometers and driving on the wrong side of the road. I must have dozed off for a bit, because I wake up as the car lurches forward into a mess of traffic unlike anything I’ve ever seen. We dive into the fray literally inches from another Toyota.

We’ve entered Kampala, the capital city.

Even though we’re in the middle of the road, cars crowd into every available space. No one pays attention to the posted speed limit signs or lane markers. And other rules of the road? Forget about it! It’s a free-for-all. It’s like we’re passengers in some video game and if we get to our destination alive then we’ve passed that level. Finally, the roads clear up as we exit the city proper.

I exhale slowly. “I survived,” I think. “Onto the next level.”

Enter the goat.

  33. Hi Florence,

VICKY NABATANZI AND THE RISE OF THREE sounds so good! I love all things folklore and action-adventure, and I’ve specifically been looking for more global MG. Even from this small excerpt, I can tell how strong Vicky’s voice is, and talk about a great first line.

If you think we’d be a good fit (you can find more about me and my tastes here: https://www.jdlit.com/savannah-brooks and here: https://www.manuscriptwishlist.com/mswl-post/savannah-brooks/), head to http://queryme.online/1346 to submit more info and a 20-page sample. Be sure to put Pitch Wars 2020 in the referral section or as part of the title (ex: VICKY NABATANZI AND THE RISE OF THREE: Pitch Wars 2020).

I’m looking forward to reading more!

    Best,
    Savannah
