Book Title:
THE HALF-LIFE OF ADELINE WENDING
Category:
2019 Entries
Genre:
Contemporary Fantasy
Word Count:
90,000

Pitch:

CONSTANTINE meets FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: Twins Adeline and Nathaniel have never gotten along. But when their demon father takes Nathaniel’s heart as payment for a grisly contract with their mother, Adeline saves his life by coughing up half of her own heart—literally. Now, bound together by dark magic, Adeline and Nathaniel must join forces with a young demon hunter and a bloodthirsty talking rabbit to track down their parents for revenge.

Excerpt:

On the morning before her eighteenth birthday, Adeline saw an omen.

The hallways of Hatton Hill were crowded with girls on their way to the cafeteria before class, seeking warm food and caffeine in compensation for leaving their beds. Adeline had been half-asleep and trying not to shiver in her uniform when a swooping shadow drew her attention to the windows lining the hall. Outside, the grass was turning brown and most of the trees had been stripped by the chilly autumn wind. An owl landed on a bare branch, pale and silent like a little ghost against the dreary sky.

Adeline stepped closer for a better look. The owl stared back at her, its dark eyes unblinking, and slowly turned its head upside down.

“What are you saying?” she muttered. She had never been very good at omens.

The owl kept staring. Then it righted its head and flew away.

At that moment, two things happened: first, a dull pain began to pulse in Adeline’s chest. Second, her phone buzzed. She pulled it out to see a message from her brother.

Did you get a birthday card from Mom?

Adeline stared. Maybe if she looked at the screen hard enough, the words would rearrange themselves into something that made sense. Birthday card, she read again. From Mom. It remained incomprehensible. She tapped the call button.
