PW2020 YA #11: SINNER’S ISLE (Fantasy: Latinx #OwnVoices)

Book Title:

Fantasy: Latinx #OwnVoices
Word Count:

Latinx PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN meets THE BELLES. Rosalinda lives on Sinner’s Isle—where the king keeps all witches under the guise of protection from those who’d see them eradicated. But safety comes at a cost: one witch must serve at the cruel king’s side. There’s no doubt he’ll choose Rosalinda and the vicious phantoms she can release from inside her, but she’ll do anything to flee the island and avoid becoming his weapon, including blackmailing the dangerous pirate who washes up on shore.

The salt-stained breeze tugged Rosa’s hair from its braid and whipped it about like angry serpents. She shoved the dark tendrils behind her ears and scowled, half expecting storm clouds to form above her head to match her darkening mood. But the sky was annoyingly blue. Not a single cloud graced her sight.

Squalls never touched Sinner’s Isle, after all. Even storms shunned the Majestics. If only the king and his court would offer the same kindness.

A bright white sail flashed in the distance. Rosa bit her lip and squinted as she leaned over the balcony banister. Another popped into view. And another still. She shifted her weight, uncomfortable with how fast her heart beat as dozens of ships blotted out the horizon.

“They’re here,” she said, her voice soft as the waves breaking on the shore. Perhaps if she spoke the words quiet enough, it wouldn’t be so. The ships would simply cease to exist. Yet no matter how many times she blinked, they still came. Before long, the vessels were passing between the bone-white statues standing sentry over the bay.

The darkness inside her, the sick power that only wished to hurt and destroy, stirred to life. The wicked phantoms stretched and sighed as though waking from a deep sleep.

    Dear Angela,

This description of your work immediately had me hooked. I would love to read more!

Would you please send your full manuscript, a synopsis of the project, and a short bio about what you do and any of your previous publications to Haley@CMALit.com? Each should be a separate attachment in Microsoft Word or PDF format. To ensure your email doesn’t get lost in the shuffle, please include “Pitch Wars” in your subject line.

The two other agents at Creative Media Agency, Paige Wheeler and Shannon Snow, are participating in Pitch Wars with me. Should one of them also request your manuscript, we would appreciate it if you would choose the agent you’d most prefer to work with and only send them the requested materials. Should they pass on the project for any reason, and you find yourself still seeking an agent, then you are of course free to resubmit to another member of CMA.

Thank you for taking the time to send me more of what you’ve written!

    Haley Casey
