PW2020 Adult #09: JUNE DALEY VS THE UNDEAD (Contemporary Fantasy)
Mentee:
Lynnie Purcell
Mentored by:
Gwynne Jackson
Book Title:
JUNE DALEY VS THE UNDEAD
Category:
2020 Adult Entries
Genre:
Contemporary Fantasy
Word Count:
87,000

Pitch:

When June Daley lost her magic (fair punishment, she erased an entire village from existence), she was supposed to lose her life along with it. Five years later, both the living and undead are after her. Armed only with her trusty not-exactly-a-wolf, her enchanted purse, a Sean Astin-obsessed troll, and a whole lot of snark, she’ll have to work miracles to save the world...as one does.

Excerpt:

Tucked on a forgotten street, along a narrow alley, and between a run-down Thai place and a necromancer same-day un-death shop, sat Repair and Restore, where a terribly obvious thief was in the process of sliding a silver spoon neatly against his balls.

June Daley, curse breaker, people hater, and ex-magic user, ignored the man as she read from a book she had found in the library section of the labyrinthine store where she worked. Though the thief was anxiously aware of every move she made, she was happy to pretend she didn’t notice him shaking his leg like he thought it would make the ball-spoon situation less obvious.

The monitor that recorded his thieving flickered and died with a low whine, as it did whenever June was nearby. She mentally shrugged and went back to reading.

If Sam, the owner of the store and its weird assortment of antiques and magical whatsits, had wanted his place to be thief-free he should have stayed to supervise. He knew she didn’t care what happened to the items once they left her workshop and were no longer cursed, hexed, or generally spiteful. Mostly, he should have hired a delivery driver a month ago instead of opting to do it himself when the old one quit. It might mean less spoons rubbing against balls.

  8. Haley Casey says:

    Dear Lynnie,

This description of your work immediately had me hooked. I would love to read more!

Would you please send your full manuscript, a synopsis of the project, and a short bio about what you do and any of your previous publications to Haley@CMALit.com? Each should be a separate attachment in Microsoft Word or PDF format. To ensure your email doesn’t get lost in the shuffle, please include “Pitch Wars” in your subject line.

The two other agents at Creative Media Agency, Paige Wheeler and Shannon Snow, are participating in Pitch Wars with me. Should one of them also request your manuscript, we would appreciate it if you would choose the agent you’d most prefer to work with and only send them the requested materials. Should they pass on the project for any reason, and you find yourself still seeking an agent, then you are of course free to resubmit to another member of CMA.

Thank you for taking the time to send me more of what you’ve written!

    Sincerely,
    Haley Casey
