Pitch:
Seventeen-year-old Liddy never thought her skill with a needle would help her become a resistance spy, but she didn’t think her rambunctious cousin would hang for breaking their country’s harsh anti-magic laws, either. Determined to make her cousin’s death count, Liddy joins a school for seamstresses trained in needlecraft and espionage. But when a mission’s success hinges on endangering friends she’s made while undercover, Liddy must decide if saving magic is worth compromising her principles—even if upholding them means risking her life by acting against her own spy network.
Excerpt:
Visiting Clarkson’s Fabrics was more soothing than an empty chapel before mass or the smell of fresh pies from the oven. Didn’t matter how upset I was, my problems would melt like butter in summer whenever I ran the tips of my fingers over the bolts of fabric. No Luddington shop could compare with those back in Levlin, but Clarkson’s came closest, putting me at ease the minute I stepped inside.
I passed the silks—hard to sew with and not practical for every day—and headed to the muslins, cottons, and wool Levlin imports. Simple, plain-colored cloth was cheapest, but I still searched the multicolored prints for new arrivals. Like the bright-red Tree of Life motif my hand couldn’t stop stroking. There had to be some fabric in my stash that might match—
“Mismatched, Liddy, that’s what you are. Mismatched with your wrong and right sides sewed together. Someday you’ll have to pick a side; can’t stay buried in your sewing basket forever.”
My hand dropped. Nell’s chiding hadn’t bothered me last night, so why was it now?
