Mentored by:
Sonia Hartl and Annette Christie
Book Title:
LOVE ME OR HATE ME
Category:
2018 Entries
Genre:
Contemporary #OwnVoices
Word Count:
75,000

Pitch:

Emma and Sophia have been arch-nemeses since kindergarten, and a student film festival is only adding fuel to their rivalry. Fed up with their bickering, the girls’ friends hatch a plan to end the feud. By telling each of them the other is in love with her. As the girls’ tentative friendship leads to a kiss, they must survive the film competition, a sabotage scandal, and the truth about how their relationship started. MUCH ADO meets LEAH ON THE OFFBEAT

Excerpt:

I typically delete school emails unread on principle, especially the ones they send out before the first bell has even rung, but I’m on my fourth reread of this one. I move the cursor along the words as I read them again, dragging the cursor along the phrases that made my heart jolt. NYC-LA Film Festival, emerging student artists, and my personal favorite, fully-funded trip to LA.

I sit up straighter in the stiff chair, leaning towards the Mac desktop. I’m supposed to be finishing my final for TV Journalism. I spent our entire winter break procrastinating, which is the whole reason I made Kate leave for school a full half hour earlier than we had to so I could get to the editing lab. Now, though, I’ve minimized Premiere, and the little tab sits ignored at the bottom corner of my screen as I scan the email again. I can’t tear my eyes off it. I’ve been putzing around New York with my uncle’s camera for years now, but I’ve never had the chance to show my work to people who aren’t related to me, much less industry people who would actually take it seriously. Just because the straights in Hollywood don’t know how to tell my story, doesn’t mean it’s not out there waiting to be told.

    Hi Auriane,

I will always say yes to an enemies-to-lovers story, and with the added Shakespeare nod this sounds right up my alley. I’d love to see the full. Please query me at this link (QueryMe.online/QueryQuressa/PitchWars2019) and follow the directions. If more than one NLA agent requests work from you it is okay to query more than one of us, just give us a heads-up. Good luck!
