PW2019 YA #01: LOVE FROM SCRATCH (Contemporary Rom-Com)
Mentee:
Kaitlyn Hill
Mentored by:
Susan Lee and Auriane Desombre
Book Title:
LOVE FROM SCRATCH
Category:
2019 Entries
Genre:
Contemporary Rom-Com
Word Count:
82,000

Pitch:

For fans of Emma Mills and the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen.

Reese Camden has landed a summer internship at an online cooking channel with one simple recipe for success: focus on her professional goals above all else in order to be taken seriously in a male-dominated industry. But that plan is tossed in the blender when she’s unexpectedly thrown in front of the camera alongside charming culinary intern, Benny. Add a heap of workplace misogyny, a dash of intense online scrutiny, and one hunk of a coworker giving more spice than she planned on, and her life may be the stickiest mess ever cooked up in the kitchen. As she fights for the career of her dreams, Reese must decide if a relationship with Benny can be icing on the cake...or if she’ll only end up getting burned.

Excerpt:

The man in front of me has a white cat at home.

I know this because from where I stand, smooshed into the back of a crowded elevator heading up to the forty-second floor of the office building in downtown Seattle where my internship is located, the sleeve of his suit is only centimeters from my face. As such, I can see the white strands plain as day against its black fabric—and feel the tickle in my nose that says I’m dangerously close to a sneeze.

“Lordhavemercy,” I think to myself, one big compound, catch-all word I inherited from my mamaw and so many other Southerners, religious or not. It’s what you say when you’re in too polite of company to say something worse.

Mr. Business is testing my limits, though. He just couldn’t be bothered to use a lint roller, could he? Nor to give me any personal space back here. I hope my nose breath is making him hot.
