Tanith was going to break Sovereign law tonight. She had to know who murdered her family. Extortion was the only option.
On a Citadel rooftop, she crouched behind an air conditioner, waiting.
Glowing particles appeared a few feet away, materializing into a man. Gloves, a melt-tech mask, and hooded cloak obscured his features.
Tanith walked toward him, shouting behind her own mask. “Hey!”
He spotted her and stumbled backward. “Who are you?! You shouldn’t be here!”
“And you shouldn’t buy illegal mods,” she said. “I’m your Courier.”
He gasped. “We’re not supposed to meet!” On his thumb, a teleportation ring activated, glowing faintly.
“Don’t go!” she said. “Help me. Then get your package.”
His client file stated he was a Royal Elite. Of the four classes, Royals were one step above Commoners. Next were Dynasts—children of Sovereigns. The three Sovereigns ruled everything. There’d been a fourth. Tanith’s mother.
Short-range teleporters were regulated, even for Royals. This man was important. The fact that he wanted illegal upgrades suggested he could be swayed.
“Let’s make a deal,” she said.
Tanith glanced at the traffic-filled sky. A Sovereigns Ball was tonight, meaning extra patrols. She didn’t have time for this. She held out a tiny container. He reached for it. She pulled back.
“You need this,” she said. “Play nice.”
“What do you want?”
“Intel on the Sovereigns.”
“I’m no spy.”
“You are now.”
