Pitch:

THE DRAGON WARRIOR x Việt mythology

All Erica Đinh wants is to blend in. But when the Đinh family curse balloons her feet three sizes and sprouts thick hair all over her body, she has only one option: wear trench coats forever.

She commits to hiding the curse along with its resulting superpowers, but when an ancient Việt fox demon threatens her town, Erica must overcome her insecurities to embrace her ancestors’ heroic legacy.

Excerpt:

The curse came without warning.

I went to sleep with the same skinny legs I’ve had all my life and woke up sweaty and itchy all over. I kicked off the blankets and froze. A thick layer of hair swallowed my legs in a furry cocoon.

Flopping and flailing, I tripped over my stack of manga volumes and switched the lights on. Should’ve kept them off. The hair had multiplied, infecting my arms now. Maybe I was still asleep. I didn’t try to pinch myself like they do in movies. Instead, I yanked at my arm hair. Bad move. I shrieked.

Mom burst in, took one wide-eyed glance at me, and sighed. “So, the day has finally come.”

No, this wasn’t puberty. It was much, much worse. The curse put upon us Đinh women.

I collapsed to the floor, my whole body shriveling up. Middle school starts tomorrow. And looking like this, all that time I spent picking out the perfect outfit was for nothing. I had pulled those clothes right off the mall mannequin, hoping to resemble every other twelve-year-old girl. Normal. But now… I shuddered at the thought of everyone’s eyes digging into me. I rushed past Mom and plowed through the closet until I found a turtleneck, some sweatpants, and boots. Ultimate coverage. Who cares if it’ll be eighty degrees?
