Excerpt:

I didn’t mean to burn Gabi’s hair. It just sort of happened. A harmless-ish mistake.

I headed out of band class with my drumsticks in hand. People brushed past me in the Monday rush, a shoulder sending me into one of the stone cold lockers.

That was when I heard the murmurs. They came from all around, and although I couldn’t make sense of what anyone was saying, I could gather that it had something to do with me. Sensing my classmates’ eyes burning into the back of my head, my heartbeat began racing. I swallowed in a deep breath and tried to calm myself. People said things all the time. Then again, my intuition said something was wrong, and it never lied.

“What?” I snapped, twisting to a group of students close behind.

Several of them sprinted away or avoided my glare. Then, to my left, I heard something that made my blood boil.

“Aspen is going to go off,” whispered a boy to his friend.

I locked my gaze onto him, watching the boy lean back against the locker. A drip of sweat glistened upon his tan skin as he clenched his teeth.

“What’s going on?” I demanded.

“Um…RJ,” he stuttered.

I didn’t need to hear the rest. I was already running through the hallways. Teachers yelled at me to slow down, but my best friend was in danger and that was a no-go in my book.

My red checkered Vans pounded on the concrete floor in tune with my beating heart.
